I will be honest that when I first mentioned doing this Australian Expedition my 10 year old groaned and looked as if she were in great pain. Until she heard the word “lapbook”. She quickly packed her bag and jumped on the Australian wagon. She was joined by my 1st grader and my 5th grader. They loved all the video links and mapping activities. Since my 1st grader isn’t reading independently, she needed me by her side for most of the learning. However, and I loved this, for my older 2 girls, this was definitely an independent activity.
I printed out all the lapbook items they needed and had a stack of books ready for them. On my desktop, I created a folder with links for them to visit each day. Although my 4th and 5th grader enjoyed the Australian Expedition it was a bit on the easy side of learning; which is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be “beefed up” to be more challenging for the 4th/5th graders.
I think it is perfect for the K-3rd crowd. Enjoyable, informative and engaging! I learned a few things myself.
One thing that I didn’t like was some of the “ads” on websites you were linked to. However, it is the internet and those things are often out of our control. Just a reminder to preview websites before you click on them with your children standing near. Also, and I know I am in the minority here, I don’t have a color printer. Most of the pages to print are in color. It would be nice to have the option of printing in black and white and having the children color if needed. For instance, there was a matching game that was all in color. I didn’t even print it out because it would have been pointless as everything would be black and not various colors. I hated it as it would have been an easy way to include my preschooler in that day.
In the end, I would definitely do another Download N Go and my children would agree.
