One of our favorite passages of scripture as a family is Deuteronomy 6: 6-7. What a pleasant surprise when I discovered that this scripture was the foundation for Good Morning, God by Davis Carmen.
In this book, we meet a 4 year old boy and go through a week with him and his family. We join the boy each day, as he worships at church with his family, as he joins his siblings in the school room, out on a walk and even being caught climbing for the cookie jar. Each day begins with his saying good morning to God and ends with him in prayer to God.
In simple, engaging text and with delightful illustrations, it teaches the concept of Deuteronomy 6:6-7; how he is taught about God when he sits at home, walks along the way and when he gets up. The book is directed to the 1-8 year child and I believe that is a great target age. My 3yr, 5 yr and 7yr old girls thoroughly enjoyed the book. (I will admit that I found it a wonderful book as well and there were a few older ones sneaking a listen.)
This could be used as a simple, sweet addition to your home library. However, it can also be used as a mini-curriculum or family worship tool. At the end of the book, there are questions and activities for each day covered in the book; Sunday to Sunday. One qualm I have with books that deal with Scripture is that they are so often superficial and we have very few on our shelves. The questions and activities at the end of this book direct you to more Scripture, encouraged great discussion (my older kiddos really jumped in on the questions) and help my little ones to think a bit deeper.
Alternate pictures in the book are black and white and as I was readying thought it would be lovely if my children could color them. Apologia Press had the same great idea and a coloring book can be purchased along with the book to keep little hands busy and reinforce discussion.
Good Morning, God can be purchased for $14.00 and the coloring book is $4.00.
