Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers

In our home, we love to gather up and spend a bit of time singing hymns. We may just share a few from memory or pull out the hymnals and  flip through until we find one we want to sing. Hymns are such beautiful expressions of praise, thanksgiving and honor to the Lord. When we know the story behind the hymn and the hymn writer, it can bring even sweeter understanding to our singing and worship.

In our history studies last year, one of the suggested books for my daughter was Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation. Although only assigned to one daughter, I found it had become the favorite of others. When Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers was presented for review, I knew that it would be a delightful addition to our studies. Christian Liberty Press has produced an excellent resource in the Mr. Pipes Series!

British Hymn Makers

Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers:

In Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers we travel to England with Annie and Drew. These two young people from America have found themselves in a small English village preparing for a boring summer ahead. However, they happen upon Mr. Pipes; a lovely gentlemen who plays the pipe organ, loves to go fishing and loves to share a story! As you read each chapter, you share in the stories that Mr. Pipes tells about Issac Watts, Charles Wesley, Thomas Ken. and more.  Fascinating details such as that their were nineteen verses to O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing and the heart that Charles Wesley had for prisoners.

The stories on the hymn writers are not short, informational chapters. The writing is engaging and share the full story of the hymn writers and their faith. Throughout the chapters, not only are the stories of the hymn writers shared, their is also a value for traditional worship and music shared.

Christian Liberty Press recommends the Mr. Pipes books for grades 7-10.  However, we used them as a family read aloud. My children ages 6 and up all enjoyed hearing Mr. Pipes stories. Depending on the interest and abilities of your students, you can utilize Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers for a variety of grades.

For this review we had a PDF copy of Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers. This meant that I had to read from my computer which is not enjoyable for me. I, personally, would prefer a hard copy of this book. The pricing difference is minimal between the PDF and hard copy so when purchasing, it would definitely be a preference issue for which form you buy.
