Several days ago, a friend shared a prayer request; she was asking for prayer that she would stay encouraged and focused on what needed to be done. She was fighting feeling overwhelmed…discouragement…”what’s the point” in even trying. That request was fresh on my mind as I gathered my children together for our morning Bible reading and prayer.
This is not a session of deep theological debate or study. We read scripture, pray and work on our memorization. For the past several weeks we have been reading a Psalm each morning. Oh, how I love the Psalms. I am continually amazed at how the Lord will have us reading a Psalm on a day where it speaks to my heart. I should be amazed. He is our Creator, our Sustainer, our Father, our Provider, our Hope, our Salvation…He cares for us beyond anything we can imagine.
Yet, I am continually amazed at His mercy and grace, His compassion, His love…This day was no different. We open up our Bibles to Psalm 70; each reading a verse until it is done. The children complain a bit. It is only five verses. There are more than five of us. Someone isn’t going to get to read. Before we even get started, some are campaigning for reading two Psalms. Let’s just get through Psalm 70 first.
Make haste, O God, to deliver me!
Make haste to help me, O Lord!
Let them be ashamed and confounded
Who seek my life;
Let them be turned back and confused
Who desire my heart.
Let them be turned back because of their shame,
Who say, “Aha, aha!”
Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
And let those who love Your salvation say continually,
“Let God be magnified!”
But I am poor and needy;
Make haste to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay.
Beautiful, beautiful words. I keep reading this Psalm again and again. I could weep each time I read those words. Let God be magnified.
When your husband loses his job….let God be magnified.
When you stumble in caring for your children…let God be magnified.
When you bury a child….let God be magnified.
When you don’t know what to do…let God be magnified.
When you feel like you are alone…let God be magnified.
When you rock your baby to sleep…let God be magnified.
When you are folding laundry…let God be magnified.
When…when…when…let God be magnified.
After we read the Psalm I knew that I had to share this with my friend. She had asked for prayers for encouragement; to stay focused; to not give up……. Make haste to me, O God.
Five verses. Five beautiful verses that point us to the Savior. Cry out to Him. He is your Help. He is your Deliverer. No matter what you are facing…seek Him…and let God be magnified.
