Summer in the Psalms

“The words of the Lord are pure words,

Like silver tried in a furnace of earth,

Purified seven times. “

Psalm 12:6

Last year, the children and I read through the Book of Psalm. We generally read a Psalm when we gathered at the table for lunch.  Sometimes I would read the whole psalm or we would rotate around the table. What beautiful words we read during that time.  Again and again I have found myself returning to certain psalms.

A friend of mine suggested that a group of us read through the Book of Psalm over the summer.  I did not hesitate. Our plan is simple.  We read two psalms a day; one in the morning and one in the evening. (Or whatever reading times work best for you.)

There is no formal study book nor scheduled times of discussion.  We share when we desire, discuss what we read or nothing at all.  For me personally, I wanted to do more than just read. I truly wanted to savor the words of the Lord as I read through each psalm. I had recently purchased a new journal but had not decided how I wanted to use it.  I set it aside to use as my record of my Summer in the Psalms.

What do I journal? Some days I write out a prayer and others I may jot down a verse or two that really left an impression on me.  There are days when I copy the whole psalm.

What a balm to my heart the psalms are each and every time I read them.  Throughout the psalms I am reminded of God’s great mercy and love, His righteousness and sovereignty, His justice and truth, and His salvation.

I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart;

I will tell of all Your marvelous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in You;

I will sing praise to Your name,

O Most High.” Psalm 9: 1-2

Have you read through the Book of Psalm lately? I look forward to sharing throughout the summer!
