The past few years, while we have enjoyed Christmas themed picture books, I haven’t spent much time on reading chapter books that deal with Christmas. This year I decided to pull an old favorite or two to enjoy.
However, I really wanted to wrap up the books we had in progress. Two read alouds were under way:
The Field of Home by Ralph Moody. We so love the Little Britches series. This is going slowly because we try to wait until the Dad is home to join us. I don’t think this one is going to get wrapped up but will slowly travel with us through December.
The second one is The Year with Miss Agnes. I started this with Lydia and Hannah, um, weeks ago? It was misplaced for a bit but I discovered it right before Thanksgiving. This is one of my favorite read alouds so I didn’t want to put it off any longer. We have just two chapters left and it is finished.
If you haven’t read The Year with Miss Agnes, I highly recommend you add it to your list for 2014. It is set in the 1940’s in a small, Alaskan village. The village has trouble keeping a teacher in their small school. Miss Agnes comes for a year and she teaches school in a way the children have never seen before. You could easily use it along with a study of Alaska or let it stand alone.
We have used the book on its own and have had great discussions with each chapter. From discussing art work, music, disabilities, science, and history much has been learned while reading The Year with Miss Agnes.
If you want a bit of guidance Homeschool Share has an excellent resource to help you bring out discussion and topics to further learning.
And you can always just read it to enjoy a great story! You know it is a good book when your older ones want to be close by when you read.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some pictures of how Miss Agnes inspired me to replan our day.
