“A doctor is advertised by the bodies he cures. My business is advertised by the minds I stimulate. And let me tell you that the book business is different from other trades. People don’t know they want books. I can see just by looking at you that your mind is ill for lack of books but you are blissfully unaware of it!”
The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley is serving well as my before bed reading. How I would love to walk into this bookshop and search among the shelves for a hidden treasure. Hopefully I would not been seen as lacking for a good book!
This passage does make me think of the importance for us to continually be reading a good book. I am not speaking of fluff and twaddle. I speak of books with substance, life, depth, and character. Books that engage our minds and spark our curiosity and imagination. Books that stretch what we know and deepen our knowledge.
It is not always easy to find a bit of time each day to sit with a good book and learn a bit for myself. I must remind myself that this bit of time to read each day is not taking away from all the things I must do. It is actually helping me to refocus and refresh; to exercise the brain.
Are you lacking for a good book?
