Math Made Easy ~ Addition
Over the years I have learned a very important lesson; memorizing math facts in the early grades really makes a huge difference when you hit higher math. I can still remember drilling my oldest years ago on her math facts while feeding the baby. While I know there were days she wanted to run screaming from 5+4, 4+5, etc., counting on her fingers while doing pre-algebra just wouldn’t seem very efficient!
Several weeks ago, Addition: Teaching and Learning Made Easy from Math Made Easy arrived. Hannah, 6, who floats around 1st/2nd grade in math was excited to have a review to do. I was pleased to see a program that was simple, effective and engaging. Math Made Easy – Addition is a straight forward program utilizing worksheets, flash cards and a few games to help early elementary students (K-2 grade) master addition facts.
How Does This Program Work:
Math Made Easy: Additon comes with a pre-test and a post-test. Taking the pre-test gives you a clear picture of where you child stands in mastery of addition math facts. After the pre-test, you teach your child the +0 and +1 facts that are very easy to understand and master. Once those facts are covered, you move on in teaching the remaining facts. Using the commutative property (4+5, 5+4; 3+6, 6+3), the remaining facts are covered and mastery can be obtained in six weeks.
Each week, daily worksheets are provided. Child solves an equation and then knows which color to use for different sections of a picture. Another worksheet has a word problem to help the child apply the facts in real life scenarios. The worksheets follow a pattern each week and helps set routine and structure while learning the facts. Flash cards for each week are provided; each week covers 6 new facts. The cards are made of durable card stock and could easily be laminated for lasting durability. At the back of the book are a few “file folder” type games to help reinforce and review math facts. Lesson plans are included at the beginning of the book. However, the program is really straightforward and easy to implement.
Pricing:
Addition: Teaching and Learning Made Easy – Homeschool Package – $24.95 . This book included: pre/post tests, lesson plan, flash cards, printable games and weekly worksheets for 6 weeks. Copying is allowed within an individual family.
Our Thoughts:
My 6 year old enjoyed this program. She looked forward to her worksheets each day. We reviewed the flash cards daily and she “won” more cards each week. She enjoys coloring and cutting so the worksheets were perfect for her. I liked the program because it offered an easy way to practice the basic addition facts but the presentation was fun. It didn’t require a lot of prep on my part. I think the key to success comes down to drilling the math facts with your child. Hannah still doesn’t have all her facts down but is well on her way.
For the homeschool family, I think this could be a great resource. At first I wasn’t sure it was worth the price; just simple worksheets and flash cards. However, it saves me the time of having to find or create my own worksheets. It is fun practice. The ability to reproduce the worksheets for my other young students is very appealing.
