Say Cheese! Back to School Pictures 2017

This year I had planned to find a really cool location to snap a few pics for “back to school”. We all know the whole “back to school” concept is just an excuse for me to get pictures of my kiddos. Does anything ever go according to plan? We started our new school year when college classes began for my oldest two girls; almost two weeks ago. Today I decided to just roll with it. Everyone was home, the weather was lovely, and the baby was happy. Picture time!

Rebekah is a Freshman in college. Despite her desire to avoid picture day she was encouraged to cooperate. She still lives at home so I know where her yummy yarn is located. I was willing to take the yarn hostage.

Mary is a Senior in high school. She is also taking a few courses via dual enrollment at our local community college. It is weird having my two oldest gone every day but thankful that they are doing so well.

Caleb – Sophomore year of high school. The years are flying by with this guy! Looking forward to some great discussions with him this year.

Lydia – Freshman year of high school. Freshman? When did that happen? Trust me, she would rather be drawing.

Hannah – 6th grade She may be my first to have a true love of science especially in relation to animals. Can’t wait to see where the year takes her!

Sarah – 4th grade This girlie is likely my future right hand. She is always eager to help and does great at her independent work. A really cool big sister.

Sam – 2nd grade This guy…he is a funny one. Loves to talk and loves to laugh. Thankful he can laugh and talk all he wants while learning. He’s a smart guy.

Martha – Kindergarten! The baby girl and she loves it. So happy to be learning to read and to do her math.

Ezra – He is three! And full speed ahead. He is Mr Energy. Go, go, go!!! But cute, yes?

David – 11 months Ah, the little guy. He might have us all wrapped around his little fingers. How can you resist that face?

Do you have any Back to School Traditions? The photo session is my only one. Now let’s have a great year!

And the Tribe Adds One..

Hello? Anyone there? This blog has been so quiet. All of my lovely intentions to share all of our lovely reading with you over the past several months has failed to come to fruition. It seems that the days get crazier and busier. When I finally have a quiet moment to formulate a thought or two, well, my brain goes into hibernation mode.

And then the Tribe adds one….Yes, a sweet, adorable little guy decided to come a couple of weeks early and melt our hearts.

David Matthias arrived September 24th weighing in at 7lbs 13oz. Everyone is absolutely in love with him. Ezra is delighted to be a big brother and gives lots of kisses to David. Or as Ezra calls him, “Dave”.  I have to constantly chase away siblings who want to hold Little Dave. No lack of love or attention here.

The little guy is currently napping so now I get to do a few reading lessons, check in on math progress, and see how science narrations are looking. Then I’ll be back to rocking and cuddling the little one.

School Pictures – The Teens

A couple of weeks ago, I officially became the mother of four teens. When this parenting journey began, I would have told you that I loved little children and was, honestly, dreading the teen years. However, reality has been completely different from those clueless thoughts years ago. And I am so thankful!

I have some fabulous young adults in my home that bring much joy and laughter. Daily. Parenting, no matter the ages or stages of your children, is difficult and rewarding. I like to think we lean more toward rewarding than difficult. I’m going to miss these kiddos when they leave home.

So, yes, I compelled my older four to play nice for Picture Day.

Lydia, 13, is one of my beautiful redheads. Even as a young child she valued the quiet and alone time. She still does. I often find her hidden away in her room with a good book. Or with sketch pad in hand. She has aspirations to one day be an artist and I think leans toward illustrating books.

Caleb, 14, bears the burden of being surrounding by all these teen girls. Is it any surprise that he enjoys a good hike in the woods? Well, unless he has a good book on hand. He is a smart, intelligent young man who offers up excellent conversation. His future? There has been some discussion of the military but I’m not confident that it is set in stone.

Mary, 16, is my take charge, get it done girl. She plans to one day teach piano and perhaps do music therapy as well. In her free time she loves to sew, read, and any number of other things. She doesn’t believe in idle hands. Get up and get busy is her motto!

Bekah, 17, is a senior this year. She is taking a couple of classes via dual enrollment but the majority of her studies are still at home. Give her chocolate, a good book, and some yummy yarn and she is a happy girl. You will often find her hanging with Lydia in the their bedroom, quietly, enjoying her current read or knitting project. What does her future hold? She is unsure but with her love of literature, I can see her leaning in that direction.

I think that wraps up the torture we call Back to School Pictures for 2016-2017.  I am sure they are looking forward to a new family picture when we need to update this fall. Ha!

Now back to the books!
