Indelible – Kristen Heitzmann

In a clash of light and darkness, can courage prevail?

Rescuing a toddler from the jaws of a mountain lion, Trevor MacDaniel, a high-country outfi tter, sets in motion events he can’t foresee. His act of bravery entwines his life with gifted sculptor Natalie Reeve—and attracts a grim admirer.

Trevor’s need to guard and protect is born of tragedy, prompting his decision to become a search and rescue volunteer. Natalie’s gift of sculpting comes from an unusual disability that seeks release through her creative hands. In each other they see strength and courage as they face an incomprehensible foe.

When a troubled soul views Trevor as archangel and adversary, Redford’s peaceful mountain community is threatened. Together with Police Chief Jonah Westfall, Trevor presses his limits to combat the menace who targets the most helpless and innocent.

Ms. Heitzmann has done it again. From the moment I opened the book, the characters grabbed me and I couldn’t wait to turn the next page! You instantly get a feel that so much is lying under the surface and keep reading and reading as each layer is pulled back.

Trevor, fighting against the past, seeks to save those in danger. Natalie, with her special gift, sees so much more than the surface emotions. As their lives begin to intertwine, the danger for Trevor and those close to him grows. Who is endangering innocent ones to reach Trevor? What will happen if he can’t save the person closest to him, Natalie? Thrilling page turner, Ms. Heitzmann has given us again.

Indelible takes place in Redford, CO so you get to visit characters from her previous novel Indivisible. While they are a part of the story, Indelible is not lacking if you haven’t read Indivisible. However, you will want to when you are done.

Ms. Heiztmann is a gifted suspense writer. Her ability to draw you in is excellent but while the story lines may appear a bit extreme, they are not unbelievable. She really gets to the heart of her characters and draws them close to the Savior.

If you love suspense and Christian fiction, grab a copy of Indelible!

Too Rich For a Bride – Book Review

With a head more suited to bookkeeping than a bridal veil, Ida’s dreams include big business- not beaus.

Ida Sinclair has joined her sisters, Kat and Nell, in the untamed mining town of Cripple Creek, Colorado for one reason: to work for the infamous but undeniably successful businesswoman, Mollie O’Bryan. Ida’s sisters may be interested in making a match for their determined older sister, but Ida only wants to build her career.

Under Mollie’s tutelage, Ida learns how to play the stock market and revels in her promising accomplishments. Fighting for respect in a man’s world, her ambition leaves little room for distractions. She ignores her family’s reservations about Mollie O’Bryan’s business practices, but no matter how she tries, she can’t ignore the two men pursuing her affections—Colin Wagner, the dashing lawyer, and Tucker Raines, the traveling preacher.

Ida wants a career more than anything else, so she shrugs off the suitors and pointed “suggestions” that young ladies don’t belong in business. Will it take unexpected love—or unexpected danger—for Ida to realize where her priorities truly lie?

This book is the second in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek Series. I have not read the first book in this series and was delighted to find that Too Rich For a Bride could stand alone.  Ms. Hodgson does an excellent job and giving you necessary information for the story to flow on its own while creating interest in the previous book.

Ida Sinclair desires to be a success in the business world which was viewed as acceptable during her time. In spite of harsh events that could have halted her endeavor, she preservers and continues toward her goal.

Life brings her to live in town with her sisters and she encounters two gentlemen that express interest in her; a lawyer and a traveling preacher. We are instantly drawn to the traveling preacher as we see the struggles he has faced in recent years and how his faith in God brings him through. And the lawyer, while a gentleman, leaves some doubt lingering in your mind.

Ida resists her attraction to focus on her success. She quickly learns that success in business comes at a price. Is it a price she is willing to pay?

I found this a quick, enjoyable read. I think it would have been better if it was a bit longer so the characters and storyline could have been developed a bit more. It ended too quickly and some aspects of the story seemed a bit stilted. Overall, it was a great read that makes for an enjoyable afternoon.

Sir Quilan and the Swords of Valor

Two friends face the Dark Knight’s deadliest scheme, but only one knight has the courage to overcome.

Sir Quinlan leaves his boyhood friend to serve the Prince, fighting a battle darker and more intense than any he’s ever known. The mysterious Sir Baylor recruits him into the ranks of an elite unit of knights known as the Swords of Valor, but when tragedy strikes and everyone blames Quinlan, the Swords of Valor disband, ending a legacy of heroic deeds.

Alone and despairing, Quinlan wanders the kingdom, fleeing his past. His providential encounter with Taras, a mysterious Silent Warrior and former trainer of Valor Knights, offers Quinlan a chance to redeem himself and learn the ways of the secret warriors.

The training is grueling, and just when Quinlan seems to have left his failures behind, he receives an impossible challenge from the Prince—one that will force him to face his past…and the mighty men who blame him for the tragedy that ruined them.

Can Quinlan reunite the Valor Knights in time to save the people from the Dark Knight’s evil plot to rule the Kingdom of Arrethtrae, or will the Valor Knights lose the most important battle of all?

Several months ago, a friend recommended Chuck Black’s Kingdom Series to me. My children devour books quickly so I am always looking for quality selections. We were give book one of the Kingdom Series and my daughter was hooked. When Sir Quilan and the Sword of Valor arrived at our door, I had to remind her that I needed to read it first.

From the first few pages I was captured into the story of Twitch. Twitch was a young man that was average or even a bit below average. He had given himself to service for the Prince but wasn’t the greatest swordsman and walked in the shadow of his friend Tav.

However, the Prince, uses the unlikely and the ordinary to do great things. When Twitch gives himself to whatever the Prince needs him for, the Prince changes Twitch and helps Twitch to see who he is in the Prince’s eyes. Along this journey, Twitch transforms into Sir Quilan and encounters many challenges and obstacles that make him a mighty servant of the Prince. Sadly, not all heed the call of the Prince and their journey does not end well.

Mr. Black does an excellent job with this allegory. The setting of knights and swords and mighty battles engages young readers and opens the door for great conversation. Discussion questions are provided in the back of the book. My daughter and I have discussed much about the book and how it relates to our walk with Christ. As a father of 6, Mr. Black knows his audience well. We look forward to reading more of Mr. Black’s Knight’s series. Sir Quilan and the Swords of Valor is one we would recommend to others.
